چکیده Sunlight is the most abundant source of light for plant development. Due to the influence of clouds, rain, and other climatic conditions, natural light alone might not always be sufficient for the best possible plant development in the environment. So artificial lighting is necessary in plant-growing facilities. More than a century has been spent using additional illumination in horticulture to promote plant development and growth. As an alternative to traditional fluorescent lights, Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights have a lower power consumption and greater luminous efficiency, which makes them ideal for horticulture applications. Over the past few decades, LED technology has mostly been used in the design or renewal of lighting installations in greenhouses. LEDs have a wide range of uses in horticulture lighting, including photoperiod lighting for greenhouses, controlled environment research lighting, tissue culture illumination, and supplemental lighting. Besides it has many advantages compared to other light sources for instance: long life, low energy consumption and no heat generation. Changing in light intensity and quality have an impact on the morphology and physiology of plants. The goal of this review is to investigate the potential of LED technology for the lighting of ornamental plants in greenhouses and other horticultural environments and to provide a review of the benefits of LED lighting for the development and growth of ornamental plants.
