چکیده While documenting the stressful effects of muddy rain for the first time, this study mainly aims to support or reject the following hypothesis: the interspecific competitive ability (aggressivity) of two closely related species, lambsquarters vs. quinoa, can be affected by muddy rain. The species were planted in a replacement series design and treated at the plants’ 2- and 4-leaf stages with a 0.04 mm rain containing 0, 625, 1250, 2500, and 5000 ppm soil. Only muddy rain with 5000 ppm soil stressed both species, causing dry weight loss that did not exceed 10%. Based on the Aggressivity Index (≅ 0), both species had an equal competitive ability when treated with rain containing 0 and 625 ppm soil. Other rains with more soil increased the Aggressivity Index (> 0) of lambsquarters against quinoa. This finding might provide a new perspective on understanding the persistence strategies of lambsquarters in agroecosystems.
