In Iran, traditionally, men have been recognized as the heads of households. Consequently, women who assume this role encounter numerous problems and challenges. The present study aims to explore the historical trends of female-headed households in Iran from 1984 to 2022 and to forecast future trends up to 2050. To achieve this objective, data from the Household Expenditure and Income survey in Iran were utilized to analyze past trends. Additionally, ProFamy software was employed to project changes in female-headed households in the future. The findings reveal a steady increase in the proportion of female-headed households, rising from over 57% over the past two decades. The results of the Projections indicate that, based on various scenarios, it is expected that by 2050, between 17 and 21 percent of households will be headed by women. Predictions also suggest a significant increase in the number of one-person households headed by females, with their share expected to surpass 50% by 2050. Despite the projected increase in one-person households, there is also an anticipated decline in the share of female-headed single-parent households, potentially indicating changes in family structures and support systems. Moreover, the expected decrease in three-generation households raises concerns regarding the potential loss of important familial functions, such as values transmission and caregiving support. These findings underscore the need for targeted policies and interventions to address the evolving landscape of female-headed households and ensure the well-being of individuals within these diverse family arrangements.
