چکیده In recent years, researchers have made much more attention to the fundamental aspects of soil remediation skills. The electrokinetics method has raised much interest among different soil remediation techniques due to its effectiveness application in fine soil remediation. The main mechanisms during an electrokinetics process include electromigration, electro-osmosis, electrolysis, and electrophoresis. Zeta potential (Z-potential) is one of the critical factors in the electro-osmosis process. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to investigate the influence of heavy metals on zeta potential variations of kaolinite soil. To achieve the above objective, several kaolinite samples were laboratory contaminated with lead nitrate. Then, the zeta potential of these samples was measured. Similar experiments were performed upon samples adjusted at different pH. The results show that variation of Z-potential of samples increases in soils with pH≥8. One can attribute this to the properties of variable charge and pH-dependent charge of kaolinite. As the concentration of lead nitrate rises, the magnitude of zeta potential reduces suggesting that thickness of the electrical double layer decreases. Consequently, one may expect that the electrolysis/electromigration phenomenon becomes important for remediation in electrokinetics technique.
