This presentation on four decades of urban renovation and regeneration policy and practice in Iranian historic cities included the following parts: Historic areas of Iranian cities: Original features & later periods of change; Review of urban rehabilitation and renovation policy in Iran; The need for a new approach: Urban regeneration principles, pillars and programs; Review of executive measures & finally some concluding points. Most importantly, Urban Regeneration is a relatively new policy in Iran to solve urban issues which is integrated to the principles of Conservation in historical parts of the city. It is necessary for the two to have common and legal ties in all fields including the approach, policy, program & action. As a stimulus for development, implementation of initiative projects by the government and municipalities as a pattern can help create a flow by attracting the attention of different stakeholders to a degraded area.
