Phosphine gas-producing tablets are used as insecticide and rodenticide in grain and wheat warehouses. Produced phosphine gas in warehouse, enters the respiratory system of warehouse workers and results in poisoning. In the present study, the protective effects of hydroalcoholic extract of mint was investigated against phosphine gas induced poisoning. In this regard, 50 male rats (200-250 gr) divided into experimental groups of control, phosphine, prevention, treatment and prevention-treatment accidentally. The groups of prevention and prevention-treatment in period of first 10 days, prior to induce of poisoning with phosphine gas, was gavaged hydroalcoholic extract of mint, once a day. The groups of phosphine, prevention, treatment and prevention-treatment in period of second 10 days, every day for 5 minutes, were exposed to phosphine gas respiration. Finally, the groups of treatment and prevention-treatment in period of third 10 days, after induction of poisoning with phosphine gas, was gavaged hydroalcoholic extract of mint, once a day. After all three periods of prevention, induction of poisoning and treatment, the rats were deeply anesthetized by ketamine and xylazine; then, blood samples and tissue specimens were analyzed. Investigation of blood markers indicated that mint extract had a significant protective effect in reduction of oxidative stress. The protective effect of mint extract as prevention was more efficient than treatment, and as prevention-treatment was the most efficient method. Also, study of tissue specimens indicated that phosphine gas-induced poisoning complications decreased in the groups receiving mint extract.
