One of the requirements of todays world, according to the needs of humanity to improve material characteristics to achieve the desired functionality. In civil engineering, improvement of materials and substances has recived considerable attentions. Modification of steel, concrete, and soil are some examples. A cutting edge method of sanitation of materials involves using nano-technology. The capability of sorting materials’ atoms in any arbitrary form, has provided a great chance of modification. Employing the modified nanoclay particles in geotechnical engineering can provide new traits of soils. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of adding modified nao-clay Na clousite to anzali shore sand. To this end, a series of tests were conducted in direct shear apparatus with several percentages of nanoclay to determine the strength behaviour of the sand mixture. The analysis was made on nao-clay free samples and samples with 2, 4, and 6 percent of nao-clay. Choosing this variety of nanoclay contents could provide great opportunities of comparing the results. The sample preparation method, the moisture content added and the procedure of curing of the samples were similar for all the tests. Among the main factors influencing the results 3 different level of stresses and 3 different values for void ratios were chosen. The result showed that by adding various percentages of nanoclay to the sand, the samples' strength were increased. Adding 4 percentages of nanoclay * to the maximum strength, making it the optimum content to improve the strength characteristics of the soil. Increase in the residual strength, internal friction angle and cohesion of the soil due to the increase in the nanoclay content was also observed. Bentonite was also added to the sand to provide a basis for comparison betweent it and nanoclay as additives the result showed that nanoclay had more effection increasing the strength of the sand.
