Abstract

Thick-walled cylinders are specially used in various high-tech industries to withstand internal pressure. The presence of the compressive residual stresses in the wall of these vessels increases the bursting pressure and their fatigue life. The processes of autofrettage and radial interference in multilayer cylinders are among the conventional methods of creating compressive residual stresses. To achieve higher strength and fatigue life, the combination of these processes is also used. This research studies the bursting pressure of a double-layered cylinder with a semi-elliptical planar crack on the inner surface of the inner layer. These layers have some interference, and the inner layer is autofrettaged. Effects of various parameters as autofrettage percent, radial interference, depth, angle, and geometry of the crack are investigated on the J-integral distribution and bursting pressure. The inner and outer layers were made of AA 7075-T6 alloy. The periodic nonlinear hardening behavior of this alloy has been estimated using the Chaboche model. The validity of the results has been checked and acceptable accuracy of the numerical results proved by experimental data.
