Abstract Linguistic context plays an important role in the analysis and discovery of meaning to the extent that many linguists believe that meaning is discovered only through being in context. Accordingly, the present study examines al-Ikmāl verse (Q 5, 3), which is one of the most prominent verses of the Holy Quran and has been the subject of debate between Shiites and Sunnis throughout history. The main difference and dispute in this verse is related to determining the meaning of the term al-Yawm which in the linguistic context of the verse is connected with different concepts such as despair of infidels, perfection of religion, completion of blessings and God's pleasure. Due to these relations, the commentators' opinions on the meaning of al-Yawm are completely influenced by their views on the mentioned concepts. Examining the various hypotheses about the meaning of al-Yawm and evaluating them based on other elements of linguistic context in the verse demonstrates that al-Yawm in al-Ikmāl verse can only refer to the day of Ghadīr Khum (18 Dhu al-Ḥajjah).
