Abstract In the present study, a new and green catalyst was prepared by the immobilization of nickel complex on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via the simple, effective and economical procedure. The structure and surface of the nanocatalyst was investigated by various techniques. Nickel complex immobilized on CNTs was found to be a non-toxic and reusable nanocatalyst for the synthesis of a diverse range of α-aminoalkyl naphthols under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. Compared to the previously reported catalysts and condition, this new method consistently has the advantage of good to excellent yields and short reaction time. Finally, the theoretical study was implemented to study the influence of catalyst on the activation energy of the final step of the mechanism. The computational studies provide a successful interpretation of the experimental observation and the activation barrier in the presence of nanocatalyst is 3.23 kcal mol−1 lower than the corresponding barrier in the absence of nanocatalyst.
