Title Incorrect reports of Eimeria spp. from dogs—Veterinary and medical parasitologists should work closer
Type JournalPaper
Keywords Eimeria, dog, veterinary parasitology
Abstract Mirbadie et al. [1] studied 552 fecal samples from dogs in Semnan Province, Iran using conventional sedimentation and flotation techniques and identified different helminths and protozoan parasites. In their article, authors stated that 13.2 % of tested dogs were infected with Eimeria spp., despite the fact that canids do not host any Eimeria species. We guesstimate that the objects which authors observed could be oocysts of members of the genera Cystoisospora, Neospora, Sarcocystis, Hammondia or Toxoplasma depending on their size [2,3]. So far, oocysts of Cystoisospora, Neospora and Sarcocystis in feaces of dogs have been reported from Iran [4,5]. In the latter reference ([5]) however, also the authors incorrectly have listed Eimeria spp. as parasites of dogs.
