Abstract Electric vehicles (EVs) are not new and are even older than those powered by diesel fuel that was introduced toward the end of the nineteenth century. EVs were developed in the mid-eighteenth century at a time when liquid fuels were rare. EVs differ from those powered by liquid fuels, whether fossil or renewable, since the energy they consume can be generated from a large variety of sources including solar and nuclear power. It should be pointed out that the solar electric vehicles (SEVs) realize a clear link between the transport sector and the renewable energy. This paper implemented the proposed multiple input energy storage system (ESS) for SEVs. The proposed ESS topology used photovoltaic cells, energy storage (e.g. battery, supercapacitor), multiple input DC-DC converter and proportional integral based controller. All of the parts of the proposed ESS were modeled in MATLAB/SIMULINK.
