Abstract
|
The relationship between inequality, social unrest, and violence is one of the oldest concerns of political economy. A high level of inequality among regions might lead to social insecurities and dissatisfaction in poor regions of the country, which can finally make an incentive for terrorist activities. Using data from the Middle East countries during 1990 to 2015, this study seeks to investigate inter-regional disparities in the Middle East and domestic terrorism. The aim of this study is to understand if countries with higher levels of inequalities have more terrorist activities or not. The study focuses on domestic terrorism because different arguments show that inter-regional disparities affect domestic terrorism rather than international terrorism. Panel data method is used to estimate the relationship between variables. The results show that the relationship between inequality and domestic terrorism is positive and significant, i.e. the increased level of inequality increases the number of terrorist activities.
