Type Presentation
Keywords Epidemiology, Bacillus anthracis, Hamedan
Abstract Background: Anthrax is an infectious zoonotic disease caused by a Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium named Bacillus anthracis. Despite that the disease is controlled in developed countries, it is still a major problem in developing countries. Iran is an endemic area of anthrax which is ranked third among the affected countries in 2012. As Hamadan is one of the contaminated regions in our country, the present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of anthrax disease in animals in Hamedan province of Iran. Materials and Methods: This study was a retrospective study to describe the prevalence of anthrax during the past decade (1382 to 1392) among animal cases from different regions of Hamedan province. Results: According to the statistics retrieved from the veterinary office, 11 cases of anthrax were reported in animals over the past decade. There were two centers of the disease. One case occrued in the village Akhtachy, while the other ten cases were reported from Bahar town. Sheep was the only infected species in all of the cases. Discussion and conclusions: The results showed that the disease has occurred in Hamedan province of Iran. Moreover, it seems that Bahar town should be considered as a potential focus of Anthrax. Given that this disease is a lethal infection in humans which is related to animal cases, more information should be provided and applied to take appropriate vaccination programs to battle against the disease.
