Title Prevalence of mental Disorders Among Injection Drug Users

Abstract Background: Mental disorders and injection drug use often occur together and can interact negatively on each other. Also the levels of drug use may cause serious side effects in people with mental disorders. however it has not been studied extensively among injection drug using individuals in iran. This study aimed to assess the prevalence psychiatric disorders among young injection drug user. Methods: Study method was cross- sectional. Research statistics universe constitutes of all People suffering substance dependence disorder with pattern of injection use in Tehran and Hamedan city. The sample consisted of 235 individual with substance dependence disorder, that selected from harm reduction centers in Tehran and Hamedan city, The sampling selection method was simple random. We used the SCL90-R questionnaire to evaluate mental disorders in injection drug users. Results: results showed that mental disorders in injection drug users were common and mental disorders were associated with the initiation of injecting drug use. Average of mental disorder at the initiation of injection drug as follows; depression (50/56), Anxiety (36/40), aggression (20/97), OCD (37/22), interpersonal sensitivity (32/23), physical complaints (42/88), phobias (22/35), paranoid ideation (22/80), psychotic symptoms (32/89). Conclusions: The study findings suggest an urgent need to expand and improve diagnostic and treatment capabilities and new intervention methods to improve injection drug users with mental disorders.
