Abstract Laser ablation of a silicon wafer in N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone(NMP) solvent is carried out with a Q-switched Nd:YAG pulsed laser operating at 1064 nm wavelength with a frequency of 1KHz and a pulse duration of 230 ns that creates SiO2 nanoparticles .In this work ٫the nanoparticles are characterized by x-ray diffraction(XRD)analysis and absorption ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)spectroscopy.The shape and size distribution of the SiO2 nanoparticles are studied by transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The average SiO2 nanoparticles diameter is found to be about 9 nm and the shape of nanoparticles is close to spherical.The UV-vis absorption spectra includes a long absorption tail with a gradual increase in absorbance for the wavelength rang from 900 nm to about 400nm.
