Title Comparison of Bearing Capacity of Circular and Square Footings With Same Area resting on reinforced sand
Type Presentation
Keywords Circular foundation; Square foundation; Bearing capacity; reinforced sand
Abstract In this paper data presented from an experimental study for circular and square footing with same area that resting on sand bed. The steel model footing with 12 cm diameter (113 cm2) and square footing with 10.6 cm width in sand relative density of compaction 60% were used. For reinforced condition was used geogrid layer. The settlement-load responses of the tests were investigated. Result indicated that ultimate bearing capacity increased in square footing in comparison to circular condition and when is used the reinforcements in embedment depth (u/D=0.42) the bearing capacity ratio (BCR) was increased greatly in circular footing in comparition with square foting. In other words the reinforcement layer has the better influence for circular footing than the square footing.
