The UNESCO Regional Office in Jakarta, with the support of the Government of Japan (MEXT), will hold the first session of the webinar series titled “Open Science: From the UNESCO Recommendation to Reality in Asia and the Pacific" on 30th of October 2025 (8 Aban 1404) under the theme “Reclaiming Science as a Collective Benefit for Society.”
This event marks the launch of the regional project “Capacity Building for Open Science in Asia-Pacific: Advancing Collaborative Research for Sustainable Development,” which will run from 2025 to 2028. The project aims to promote awareness, strengthen technical capacity, and enhance practical experience in applying Open Science principles across disciplines and countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
The first webinar seeks to increase understanding of the meaning and importance of Open Science, emphasizing its role in fostering inclusive, transparent, and collaborative research for the benefit of society. The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science (2021) will serve as the guiding framework for the discussions.
The session will feature opening remarks by the Director of UNESCO Jakarta, a representative from the Government of Japan, and a panel discussion with distinguished experts including:
Dr. Sujata Raman, Australian National University – Science for the Public Good
Dr. Ismael Rafols, INGENIO (CSIC-UPV), Valencia, and UNESCO Chair on Diversity and Inclusion in Global Science, Leiden University – Open Science for Diversity and Inclusion
Dr. Leslie Chan, University of Toronto Scarborough – Equity and Fairness in Knowledge Production
Participants will include researchers, academics, students, librarians, data managers, policymakers, and science communicators from across the Asia-Pacific region. The webinar will provide a platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange among diverse stakeholders in the scientific community.
