Aromatic amines are a worthy category of compounds in biological, materials, and pharmaceutical sciences. [1] o-tolidine(OTD) (3,3'-dimethylbenzidine) as an aromatic amine, is widely used in the formation of aniline dye and different azo dyes. It has been utilized to detect haemachrome, hemoglobin, hydrogen peroxide and red blood cells and, acts as a substrate for some peroxide enzymes. [2]. On the other hand, Coumarins are an important class of naturally occurring compounds which have been identified in plants and fungals. Many of them also, have been synthesized and studied for their pharmacological activities [3]. These properties prompted us to investigate the electrochemical oxidation of OTD in the presence of 4-hydroxycoumarin as nucleophile [4]. This method represents a facile and one-pot electrochemical process for the synthesis of new 4-hydroxycoumarin derivatives in good yields and purities.
