For a ?nite group G, a proper subgroup H of G is said to be large if the order of H satis?es the bound |H| 3 > |G|. In this talk, in addition to giving a survey on the study of large maximal subgroups of ?nite groups in particular almost simple groups, we mention some applications of such study in permutation groups, combinatorics and geometry.
