Abstract

The Iranianconceptofhomegoesfarbeyondphysicalaspects,anditsessenceisinterwoven with thespiritualnatureofhumankind.Thisconcepthasgainednewmeaningswiththe modernization andindustrializationofsocieties.InIranianarchitecture,everyneedisrealized in socio-physicalsystemsaswellasindesignissues.Therefore,spatialrelationshipsarecentral to architecture,especiallyresidentialarchitecturethataddressesagreatproportionofan individual's dailylife. Space syntaxseekstoexplainhowspatialconfigurations expresssocialorculturalmeanings. One suchmeaningisconfidentiality,whichwasmainlyintroducedintoIranianarchitectureasa result ofreligiousbeliefs.InIranianarchitecture,confidentiality isviewedfromtheaspectof privacy. This studyisacasestudythatmakesuseofdescription,analysis,andlogicalreasoning.The objective istoanalyzebehavioralpatternsinthespatialconfigurations oftraditionaland modern housesinHamedan.Insodoing,libraryresearch,softwaresimulationwiththeUCL Depthmap package,andcomparisontechniquesareutilized. The findingsindicatethatthespatialconfigurations ofhouseshavechangedinthecourseof time. Intermsoftheindicesofspatialconfigurations, however,thestrikingdifferencebetween traditional andmodernhousesinHamedanrevolvesaroundtheintegrationandequivalenceof all spacesinahouse.Inotherwords,thehierarchyofaccesstospacesandtherecognitionof
