Abstract

Aristotle defined rhetoric as an ability, in each particular case, to see the available means of persuasion. He also argued that there are three primary ways to make a persuasive appeal and called these Logos, Ethos, and Pathos. Ethos is the appeal to the authority and reputation of the speaker or writer, Pathos is the appeal to the emotions and Logos is the appeal to logic. These three rhetorical tools are at the center of communication. By examining the educational method of Rumi in the Masnavi, it is revealed that this great poet and orator has used allegories in his anecdotes to prove his mystical and moral beliefs. He used three elements of Aristotelian rhetoric. Using allegory is the first and simplest way to use logos in Masnavi, and although from the point of view of logic, allegory cannot take the place of reasoning, but from the aspect of communication science, it is a very useful tool for persuading the audience. Creating a sense of identification in the audience, which takes place while narrating and telling a story, is actually using the element of pathos. And narrating stories from an omniscient point of view and interpreting and analyzing them is actually using the first element of Aristotelian rhetoric(Ethos). However, it should be noted that Rumi, like any other prominent speaker, determines the size and extent of using the three components of rhetoric according to the requirements of his educational purpose.
