Abstract

• Proximity of Interfaith worship centres in Iranian cities: Comparing three cases of Tehran, Shiraz & Hamadan Iran's location in the heart of the Middle East as one of the oldest centers of civilization on the one hand, and the emergence of Abrahamic religions in this region on the other hand, has led to a unique presence of their worship centers in the historical nuclei of many Iranian cities. There are several examples of the intertwinement of different faiths’ neighborhoods & proximity of these centers in the past, acting as an interfaith campus in the cotemporary city. Studying the remaining examples of this co-existence in three cities, belonging to different periods in the history of Iranian urbanization, has informative lessons for architects and urban planners today on how the followers of these religions have been able to create spiritual spaces as their sacred architecture close to each other & in compliance with the features of the context. More importantly, instead of increasing the conflicts, not only it helped to create mutual tolerance among the followers of different faiths, but also shaped peaceful interactions among most of them.
