This chapteraimstoshowtherateofsadnessandhappinessreflected inPersian languageinIraniansocietyinthelast50years.Languagecouldrepresent widespreademotionsinasociety – among themhappinessandsadness.These emotions areencodedinlanguagebyusingcognitivemechanismssuchas conceptualmetaphors.Basedonthecorpusofthepast five decades(1970sup until now),feelingsofsadnessandhappinesshaveexperiencedarollercoasterof rates ofoccurrenceintheIraniansociety.Thisresearchisbasedonthewrittenand spoken corpusincludingmovies,stories,lyrics,headlines,andnewswithinthe mentioned five decades.The five decadesarechosenduetoimportantpolitical and socialeventssuchastheIslamicrevolutionofIran,theIran-Iraqwar,the reformationera,etc.The findings showthatIraniansareincreasinglymoresad, particularlyinthelasttwodecades,andthisphenomenonisreflected indifferent linguisticoutputs.
