This photograph shows a boudinaged single andalusite porphyroblast in andalusite–cordierite hornfels from the NW part of the Sanandaj-Sirjan zone of the Zagros Orogen, Iran. The crystal grew in the hornfels adjacent to the Alvand batholith and was later subject to non-coaxial flow of the NE-dipping Simin-Darehmoradbeig shear zone with normal shear sense. Andalusite crystals were boudinaged and polycrystalline quartz grew in the strain shadows. Shear sense, independently determined from shear band cleavage, quartz fabrics and mantled porphyroclasts, is dextral in this field of view, making the structure an example of domino boudins in andalusite. Width of view 12 cm. Location 48.55738 E, 34.66859 N.
