Abstract

The current study explores the performance of a long chain gemini imidazolium ionic liquid (IL), namely [C12im-C4-imC12]Br2, for wettability alteration and oil displacement as well as interfacial tension (IFT) reduction of the crude oil-water system. Gemini ILs are usually known with significant surfactant behavior and environment friendly manner that revealed desired potentials for enhanced oil recovery. Experiments results show a remarkable changes in wettability and oil displacement at elevated IL concentrations were occurred. In this condition adhesion between crude oil and rock surface is reduced and higher mobility is achieved, causing the residual oil to easily detach from the surface. Moreover, drastic reduction in IFT (99.97% reduction) and achieving the ultra-low IFTs were appropriated. Also increasing temperature (within 298.2 - 323.2 K) intensified IFT reduction and decreased CMC value. The maximum IFT reduction with temperature was about 55.7%.
