Abstract

Densities, ρ, speed of sound, c, and refractive indices, n, were measured for the binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate ([BMIM][SCN]) + 2-propanol, 2-butanol, 2-pentanol, and 2-hexanol over the whole range of compositions at temperatures (288.15–338.15) K at intervals of 10 K and ambient pressure (81.5 kPa). A number of mixing rules were evaluated for the refractive index data. Excess molar volume, VmE, temperature-averaged excess molar isobaric expansion, AE, isothermal pressure coefficient of excess molar enthalpy, (∂HmE/∂P)T,x, and excess molar isentropic compressibility, KSE, were derived from the experimental data. The VmE and KSE data were found to be negative for all binary mixtures. VmE and KSE were fitted by the Redlich–Kister equation. The temperature dependence of these excess quantities was also inspected and, where available, compared to literature data of related binary systems. The results were analyzed to discuss the nature and strength of intermolecular interactions
