In this paper, we propose an effective smoothing method to solve the NP-hard absolute value equation, when the solution is unique: To do so, we uniformly approximate the absolute value function in such a way that the nonsmooth absolute value equation can be formulated as a smooth nonlinear equation. By solving a parametric smoothnonlinear equation using Newton method, for a decreasing sequence of parameters, we can get the sofotiori of the a? solute value equation. Numerical results indicate effectiveness and robustness of the method to solve abs_olute value equations.
