Abstract

The present study focuses on the photocatalytic performance of aluminum borate Al18B4O33 and titanium borides TiBx (x = 2, 12) as cocatalysts for TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). The electrospinning procedure and post calcination at 1100 ◦C as a novel method was applied to synthesize the cocatalyst–photocatalyst scaffolds in a quaternary Ti–Al–O–B system. The B/(Al + Ti) atomic ratio was adjusted to 0.8 and 2.4 as the dilute and rich boron content respectively to explore the effect of the cocatalyst part in the photocatalytic process. The results showed that with increasing the boron content, the polygonal NPs surrounding the TiO2 Nps were changed to nanoneedles. The cocatalyst fraction was almost increased more than 3 times with increasing the boron content. Also, the surface areas were 6.598 and 13.068 m2 g− 1 for dilute and rich boron content scaffolds, respectively. The photocatalytic activity test confirmed the effectiveness of the cocatalyst part. The kinetics study revealed that the degradation rate was enhanced noticeably from 0.018 to 0.109 h− 1 with increasing the boron content. Our results highly suggest the Al18B4O33 and titanium borides TiBx (x = 2, 12) as effective cocatalysts for photocatalytic applications.
