Abstract

One of the most serious health problems is osteoporosis and it is mandatory to find preventive methods to confront this difficulty. Non-pharmacological methods preferred due to less side effects. This study investigate the effect of treadmill running exercise on osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats. Thirty female 10 weeks old Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into three different groups: Control (CON), ovariectomy (OVX), and ovariectomy plus treadmill running exercise (OVX+TRAIN) groups. OVX+TRAIN group was subjected to 3 days/week treadmill running exercise since 12th post-operative week to 22th post-operative week. Finally, all rats sacrificed and their femoral bones removed for analyses. The results indicated that the OVX+ TRAIN group had better condition against bone loss and deterioration of trabecular bone architecture compared with OVX group. It evidenced by the increased levels of trabecular thickness (TT), cortical thickness (CT), bone strength and decreased trabecular separation (TS) compared with OVX group. The results indicated that the progressive load exercise has a positive effect on osteoporotic bones.
