Abstract

Introduction: Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) have been proved effective in the prevention of osteoporosis. Since much of the recent attention has focused on nonmedical methods, the purpose of this study is to compare the effect of PEMF stimulation on osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats. Material and methods: Thirty female 10 weeks old Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into three different groups: Control (CON), ovariectomy (OVX), and ovariectomy and PEMF stimulation (OVX+PEMF) groups. OVX+PEMF group was subjected to 3 days/week PEMF exposure on the 12th post-operative week. Results: After 10 weeks, the OVX+PEMF group presented better efficacy in prevention against OVX-induced bone loss and deterioration of trabecular bone architecture compared with the OVX group. This was evidenced by the increased levels of trabecular thickness (TT), cortical thickness (CT), bone strength and decreased trabecular separation (TS). In conclusion: The results indicated that the PEMF stimulation has a positive effect on osteoporosis bones. Key words: Osteoporosis, Pulsed electromagnetic field, bone loss
