Abstract

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to the value-added fuels is a promising way to mitigate global warming. However, conversion of CO2 to methanol or formic acid is very challenging due to the poor performance of the catalysts employed for the reduction of CO2. In this work, higher performance toward CO2 reduction was obtained when Pt nanowire (Pt NW) assembly is utilized as a co-catalyst in the electrochemical reduction of CO2 activated by pyridinium (PyrH+). It is found that the overall Faraday efficiency for CO2-derived products is 55%. The methanol and formic acid were the only detected compounds in aqueous solution using high performance liquid chromatography. Results of this research showed that the higher hydride accumulation on Pt NW and its morphological advancements are two major factors for superior electrochemical performance in CO2 electroreduction
