Abstract

Engineering conductive polymers (CPs) onto separation and extraction devices is a promising topic for future research in modern analytical chemistry . This chapter investigates current trends in the characteristics and uses of CPs in the separation stage of study . CPs can provide a variety of opportunities and possibilities for manufacturing novel separation materials to increase analytical performance and address analytical problems due to their remarkable properties , such as facile synthesis , large surface area , mechanical stability , light weight , low cost , and high conductivity . CPs have been either directly used or engineered to meet the demands of separation applications . CPs with reversible doping–dedoping behavior and high conductivity are promising materials for novel membranes . High thermal stability , large surface area , ease of preparation , and high ion - exchange capacity make CPs attractive as new stationary phases in chromatographic methods . However , their commercial uses have been limited due to their insolubility in common organic solvents , instability over extended periods , and the impact of humidity impact on selectivity . This chapter discusses some of the applications of CPs in the separation stage of analysis with a particular emphasis on separation membranes and chromatographic stationary phases .
